The AO4 Smile™ technique places 4 dental implants in the jaw to support a full arch of new teeth. The implants need time to integrate with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. Your diet can impact this healing process, so precautions are necessary.
Initial Post-Procedure Diet
For the first 1-2 weeks after surgery, stick to a diet of only soft, lukewarm foods and liquids. Hard or crunchy foods could potentially damage the implants before they fully integrate. Recommended foods include:
- Smoothies, milkshakes, yogurt
- Soups, broths, applesauce, oatmeal
- Mashed fruits and vegetables
- Scrambled eggs, quiche
- Mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes
- Pasta, soft cooked rice
- Shredded tuna, chicken
Avoid anything spicy, salty, acidic or very hot, as these can irritate the mouth and gums. Also do not chew gum or eat foods like nuts, popcorn or raw fruits/veggies.
Transitioning to More Solid Foods
After 4-6 weeks, as initial healing progresses, gradually introduce more solid but soft foods. Fish, pasta, rice and well-cooked vegetables are good options. Still avoid very hard, crunchy, sticky or chewy foods that could potentially dislodge the implants.
Longer-Term Diet and Precautions
By 4-6 months, most patients can resume a relatively normal diet. But continue to take precautions:
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene
- Avoid very hard, chewy or sticky foods
- Cut harder foods into smaller pieces
- Limit sugary foods
- Stay hydrated with water
With some adjustments, you can find a satisfying diet for your new dental implants. Consult your dentist for tailored advice. Following dietary guidelines gives your implants the best chance of integrating well and providing years of use.
