Any oral surgery carries a risk of infection, bleeding, swelling, reaction to anaesthesia and post-operative discomfort. Following your dentist’s instructions before and after the procedure helps reduce these risks.
Risk of Failed Osseointegration
More specific to the All-On-4 Plus® technique, one risk is the failure of the implants to fuse properly with the jawbone, a process known as osseointegration. This would require the implants to be removed and replaced. Individual factors such as oral health, bone density, smoking and diabetes influence the likelihood of fusion failure. Discuss this risk openly with your prospective dentist.
Nerve Damage
Another potential complication is nerve damage during placement of the implants, which may cause pain, numbness or tingling in areas of the mouth. This is often temporary but can, in rare cases, be permanent. Advanced imaging and surgical guides are used to map nerve pathways during planning, and careful implant positioning helps reduce this risk.
Gum Inflammation and Recession
Some patients experience gum swelling, inflammation or recession around their implants after surgery. Diligent oral hygiene and regular professional cleaning help prevent minor issues from progressing towards implant failure or the need for additional grafting procedures.
Serious Risk of Peri-implantitis
One of the more serious potential complications is peri-implantitis: infection and inflammation of the gums surrounding the implant. This can lead to progressive bone loss around the implant and eventual failure. Peri-implantitis usually results from inadequate oral hygiene allowing plaque to build up. Daily brushing and flossing around the implants is important, along with professional cleaning every 6 months.
Importance of Close Monitoring
Many potential issues can be resolved if they are detected early and managed properly. Regular examinations and maintenance are key to identifying and addressing problems before they become severe. Make sure your dentist schedules follow-up visits shortly after your procedure and at least every 6 months thereafter. Do not neglect your All-On-4 Plus® implants; keep a close eye on them.
